Another year, another huge rise in rail fares.

If you booked in advance then there is no way you could pay so much?

An off-peak return is about £50 and I've done it on two singles for £14.

EDIT: I do have a railcard, but that only makes it a third cheaper.

I've done it twice - first time was a few days in advance and I thought that was the reason.

Second time I booked almost a month in advance, same price.

Are you a train driver?

I find it galling that there are empty first class sections on the commuter trains on my route, but everyone is crammed in like sardines in cattle class.
No first class on my train, thankfully. I find it despicable that they can have them on short-haul routes. Not sure they need them at all, tbh.

I'd say my stop takes up the last of the available seats each morning.

To travel from the furthest south train station in Perth to the furthest north is a distance of 75 miles and costs less than 5 pounds.
Another reason Australia is just that little bit better

Yeah, I've been to both places, and you'd have to pay me £5 to visit either of them!

Just reading through all this. fking madness. I briefly worked n lived in that shitebox landhan many moons ago and was well pissed off with their overpriced ,over expensive and late trains n tubes. I quickly worked out that if you didnt bother getting a ticket for a certain train every day you were only gonna get caught every two to three weeks on average. accumulated about ten fines none of which i paid n saved about a grand in fares. the tube was harder but a childs ticket saved a few bob here..
Lids 10 London Transport 0 lol

Yep, used to do the same in 2001. Would get to London Bridge, go up onto the walkway to see if there was any ticket inspectors, if there was I’d skirt round to the Thameslink exit. Never got caught and barely bought a ticket the whole time.

Barriers everywhere now so not feasible anymore
