The problem with animal vets is that they never shut up about it. Met a Great Dane once, "did I tell you about my time in Vietnam?" Yes mate you did several times ffs

Because my cat's getting on a bit and has had a few problems we've had to claim for through the insurance, they wanted to put the monthly payment up from £46 to over £70 . I cancelled it and then a week later he had another issue that cost me £300 at the emergency vets. I put £50 away a month now in a pot ready for the next thing.

I don't know where you reside but any farming community have a James Herriot style even in the 21st century - no airs & graces used to call outs etc - I found they are a third cheaper as they make a fortune out of many other farm animals plus their experience is far more that a town vet who I found over the last 25 years a complete rip off - plus a poor service to boot..... in most cases I tried all my local ones all the same OTT prices plus a lack of knowledge - ask around ..for a recommended farm vet .... that 15-20 miles may well be woth it....
Same experience Joe, if lucky to be rural then vets will be sensible.

Condolences on the loss of the hound x
