Wondering if anyone has been ripped off by Vets. A friend of mine has just been charged £90to have his 17 year old dog put down, I think that isa bit over the top, what do others

I don't have a pet so totally unaware of the prices being charged, I hear a lot of owners complaining about vet fees so in the great scheme of things although it must be a greatly distressing time £90 doesn't sound overly expensive for a veterinary service.

One jab ? and the owner a pensioner ?, they should have been wearing masks for years, buttheryou go aye.

Yeah vets fees are crazy tbh, someone i know has an old Lab that has cancer in one of it's back legs and they want £8000 for an operation that may not even be successful.

Your charged for seeing the vet, which could be anything from around £30 [which can actully be more depending were you go], plus the stuff they give etc for it to be put asleep which is usually 2 Nedles [one of them been green stuff] , which is a lot as well

I had my dog in the out of hours emergency vets from Friday Evening till Sunday night. Cost just under 2 grand

Back to full health and the insurance paid the majority if it.

Yep, the emergency out of hours one i took mine to a few years a go, cost me £90 just to see them at the time, and was only there literally a few mins, lucky mine was ok at the time but then i would have had the addons of any stuff i would have needed at the time, it is quite a lot to take care of pets

My mates missus is a vet.

She ran a husband and wife rural practice until they got divorced.

She had a working relationship / friendship with her clients and never ever “ uplifted “ work - where the vet blags the client that their pet needs a health check, worming, flea treatment or sells them an unnecessary pet plan etc.

The big multi national vet chains bought out the small independents, put the vets on salaries and put gave them “ selling targets “ - health checks, worming, flea treatment and the big earner - Pet Plans.

The vets who work for these companies get their arses kicked and even get their contracts terminated if they don’t sell unnecessary stuff.

On the flip side a vet does 7 years at Uni and if they open up their own practice, they have to borrow a hell of a lot of money to open up, so you’re paying for that too.

If you can avoid the chain vets.

I had a dog years ago, when his time was coming to the end he went a bit frail but eatting, no lumps..etc was still walking around just slow, then he suddenly collapsed in the kitchen, so I called the vet as I couldn't pick him up.
So I'm in the kitchen with him, knock on the door, between me going to the door and coming back he had died, I was gutted but I think I felt better that he had lived his whole life through naturally.

As for 90 quid, doesn't sound that much, dont forget for them its just a buisness, like paying a plumber 100 notes to fix your toilet...etc or a tattooist for an hours ink

Vets in the UK have a licence to print money and sell you snake oil because unless you willingly empty your life savings into their hands you must be perceicved as an uncaring monster towards your pet. Its the English way.

£70 when our dog fell off his perch- plus whatever the wife added to have him cremated alone and boxed up. I'd be annoyed if my own funeral cost that much.

My dog is deep into treatment for an ear infection that doesn't want to shift. He's had all sorts, steroids, antibiotics, drops. He's even been put under so they can flush out his ear. When they last tested his ear it was still infected. We were probably around £1000 down but the insurance paid out for most of it. Fully expect to pay it back in extortionate premiums on the next renewal date.

As far as the vet fees are concerned, I don't know if I'm being ripped off or not. To me it seems unnecessary putting a dogs under generals anesthetic for an ear infection, but it was bothering him a lot so what's the alternative, leave him to suffer? The flip side is it's within their interest for the treatment plan to be extended so I couldn't say with my hand on my heart that I wasn't being ripped off.
