West Bromwich Albion striker Victor Anichebe has revealed that Roberto Martinez desired the 25-year-old stay at Goodison Park this summer, but his mind was made up.

“Roberto Martinez wanted me to stay but I’d made up my mind” said Anichebe. “He sent me a lovely text message after I left.”

completely at odds with this on the official Everton site last month:

Martinez told evertontv: "Victor grew at Everton and came through the ranks. He has had a terrific time at the Club but I think it was the right time for Victor to start a new challenge and it was clear that Victor was happy to do that. I have to respect that. Everything was done in the right way and Victor will always be remembered with fondness. We wish him well for the next chapter."

Probably some minor crossed wires. Roberto probably said to Victor that he was perfectly happy to include him in his plans if he wanted to stay, but Victor wanted to move.

As Roberto has said there, "it was clear that Victor was happy to do that".

Lukaku will score more this season than Vic did/was likely to do in his whole Everton career, even if we're only having Romelu for a year I'd take that over Vic seeing out his contract.
