Our most underrated keeper? Had a stormer in this game and will always remember that historical penalty shootout.

Andy Rankin, David Lawson, Dai Davies, Jim Arnold, George Wood...all GKs who filled in the gap between West and Southall.

We've had some shockers down the years. It probably deserves its own thread - they've been that outrageous.

gerrard, stowell, mhyre were all bang avergae in nets i suppose

...the goalie at the other end wasn't bad either. When you look at Rankin, he's not got the physicality of the modern day keeper but he was always a fine shot stopper. In a way, we were probably better off that he was involved in that famous penalty shoot out with Monchengladbach and I mean no disrespect to Gordon West when I say that.

It's what made me think to post the thread,he didn't have the physical stature of modern keepers. But at a time when keepers didn't get the protection they do now,he produced decent stats,at a time when we didn't know what stats were.

..I was in upper Gwladys St that famous night against Monchengladbach. If I remember rightly Royle missed his. I'm not exactly sure of the sequence but I've always had a view that the first team to miss often wins. Rankin was brilliant in that shot out.

I'd say underated, but I'm biased as he's a relation of mine. He's a legend at Watford played 300 Games and player of the year twice i think. Howard Kendall launched our book on the Rankin family and rated him very highly and said you don't get to play 500+ games in your career and not be a very good keeper.

...if I remember rightly there's a good picture of him standing near the entrance to the Mersey Tunnel. It's in the picture thread.
