Andy Gray: "I regret turning down the chance to manage Everton"

At the time I was gutted he turned as down. It may have been a disaster or he could have done OK. The fact his career has gone into nosedive means of course he'll regret it, like a lot of players who thought the grass was greener.

that's why I said gray couldn't do any worse than he did. I'm not trying to criticise Howard here, all I am saying is if gray came to us then no matter how good he could have been, at worst it wouldn't really have changed much that year.

since when have I criticised him? We did nearly go down that year, no matter who was in charge of the team. Which as above, is why I said gray couldn't have done any worse than kendall did.
It wasnt aimed at you mate it was meant as a general comment I dont know why I quoted you:confused:

Well, let's look a the facts shall we?

Howard did keep a poor Everton side in the top flight - who's to say Andy Gray would've managed that, or that we'd have gone down?

I know you weren't slating Howard, what I'm trying to say is, it could've been much worse.

He obv could have (and would have, IMO) done worse - like l4toffee just said above, we could have got relegated. Howard was working with a poor, poor side - I mean that's got to be the weakest Everton squad in living memory, even if you're 80 years old.

Novice manager like Gray at the helm would have been a total disaster. It's a measure of the man that HK took on that job; plenty of so-called great managers would have been fretting about their legacy and steered well clear of such a poisoned chalice.

in a way yes we could have went down that year. I was just reflecting on that we had a relegation season either way If Bolton had won their game. I have tried to avoid making any assumptions because who knows how good or bad a manager gray could have been? We will never know that to be fair so it's a but of a moot point.

So if it's a moot point why are you continuing trying to make it.
Simply put, Kendall despite being hung out to dry by Johnson kept us up.
Under Gray we might well have been relegated, which is worse than what we achieved under HK.
Particularly when you consider his lack of experience in managing a team.
Hence your statement 'couldn't have done worse' is a fallacy.

Who knows how he would have done, I was disappointed at the time when it fell through but couldn't care less now. I bet he does regret it,he certainly took the safe option and missed the chance of achieving something with us and in football.

it isn't. considering we stayed up out of our hands it isn't a fallacy.

We didn't go down, that's all that matters but the results that season were not of a team surviving so (without looking at the table) the difference between that and a different result is only one less win that season. hardly a big margin to say I'm wrong.
