You don't need to run around a lot when you can dictate the game from a standstill. Comparing him to Gerrard is beyond laughable; they're on a different level. A team willingly centres around Pirlo, whereas Gerrard just makes himself the centre of everything.

The likes of Pirlo Scholes and Xavi are so good they can almost control every other player on the pitch through their manipulation of passing and setting of the tempo. Gerrard has to have his whole team built around him in a certain way to cover his inadequacies and then has trouble even controlling himself. There's not even a comparison. Then there was that laughable period when Gerrard moved a bit deeper and everyone was calling him better than Pirlo despite half the midfielders in the premier league running off him and him slashing 50 yard balls out of play every week. On two occasions on the international stage where it counts the most Gerrard could get nowhere near Pirlo. Completely different class of player. He even led the best Spanish team of all time a merry dance in the first game of those Euros (1-1) that Italy really should have won. Xavi Iniesta Busquets and Alonso were just hopelessly watching him dictate the game. World Class.
