Toshiba announced today that it is discontinuing it's HD DVD format by March 2008. This leaves Sony's Blu-Ray as the sole HD format for home releases and the winner of the format war.

In one way I am happy that the silly war is over, but bad because I have the HD DVD player for the Xbox 360. It isn't all that bad though, it isn't like I spunked $400 for it, it only cost $160. Now I will be able to pick up loads of HD DVD movies for cheap in the bargain bins, and eventually buy a PS3 or a BD player.

Um... so does this mean that dvds are going the way of vhs? I'm totally out of the loop regarding HD/Blue Ray/whatever...

DVD's still outsell Blu-Rays by something like 1000:1 so DVD's are still kicking (Toshiba hold all the patents on DVD). Just Blu-Ray will eventually replace DVD's in the next few years as more HDTV's are sold.
