Bear with me on this because there is a very satisfying twist at the end.
My mum was 90 in April. She's still got all her marbles and could well outlive me (her own mum lived until she was almost 105). Last week she told me she didn't know much about her dad, who died in 1946 when she was 25. So, after checking out ancestry sites, I joined ancestry.co.uk today and have already found out plenty.
I have also checked my dad's side of the family. I already knew that his grandad emigrated from Heligoland and settled in Hull around 1850, and that the family name was shortened from the German spelling in 1912. I also knew my dad was born in Finchley, north London (where I was born) after my nan and grandad moved from Hull. What I didn't know was that my Nan's dad was married twice. His second wife was a Hull girl but his first wife was from where he himself was born.....
Not only was it Liverpool, it was Everton!
