Some of you may know my stepson played in goal for his American college team (King, TN) and later became a bit of a cult figure in his two seasons for Chattanooga FC where he won the NPSL conference title in only their second year of existence. Well, sadly, Richard decided to retire early (24) when it became apparent his lack of height (a whisker under 6') was a stumbling block in England, and the constant shoulder/hand injuries and pains just weren't worth it otherwise. It's ironic that since his decision, our local side, Welling United, asked him to play for them after a spell warming up their 'keepers before matches. Not only ironic but unfortunate for the Wings because, despite them being 2nd in their league (Blue Square South) and in a great position for at least a play-off spot for promotion to the Conference, they seem to be leaking goals at present!

Anyway.... Rich, sadly not coming home for Christmas, was chatting to his mum on the net today and told her what he was doing. We knew he was coaching 'keepers in America and was in talks with JUST4KEEPERS but when I read the blogspot he has just started I was so gobsmacked and proud of him I wanted to share it. So here it is...

Chattanooga FC?

Please tell me he was nicknamed the chattanooga choo choo, that would be ace.

Afraid not Frank, he was just a great keeper for them. I've be trying to find a clip of the save, as it was called, when Rich saved a penalty right at the end of an important game. He was already a favourite with the CFC fans but that save catapulted him to cult status. Until then I'll post an article that appeared at the end of the team's inaugural season.
