If we see them as heroes and not ordinary people being sent off to die or to kill and maim innocent people then we all buy in to what the government want us to believe.

Having several family members and more friends than I can count in all branches of service, I am severely biased in my support.

I do, however, think it has at times been over the top. I think it can be attributed in part to backlash to how military where received during the Vietnam era. At the start of the first gulf war there was a ground swelling of "support the troops" campaigns addressing that very idea.

With the current sensationalism of the U.S. media and the rise of the conservative right, it has been taken to whole new levels.

Yes, they follow lawful orders. The military, outside the uppermost echelons (and often them as well), have been lied to just like the rest of the world.

There are undoubtedly bad sorts in the military....just as there are in every group or organization that involves humans

being in the military takes tremendous bravery however it is a choice, they weren't conscripted they chose to accept the risks involved.

there are many soldiers who have genuinely performed acts of heroism however there are also many who have committed atrocities. I refuse to straw man every soldier and look beyond the fact that every individual is different.
