So this happened this morning....

Little old New Zealand defeated the mighty Team USA to bring yachting's America's Cup down under. Basically, it's the sailing equivalent of Leicester winning the Premier League. Well done lads!

Err...no it isn't. NZ have has a *very* good sailing infrastructure here, plus they where the only challengers at the last AC (which they only lost because Barker had no spine or fight in him).

This is more akin to Man UTD winning the title again......

In terms of financing, it was a mis-match. Oracle Team USA is backed by a billionaire, who cherry-picked the best in the sailing world to be on his team. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/...as-cup-new-zealand-beats-oracle-team-usa.html

Team New Zealand lost government funding after failing to win the Americas Cup four years ago. In October 2015, it got so bad that they almost had to close up shop (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11882422). Partly because of that, they had to turn to younger, up-and-coming sailing talent to take the wheel this time around (hence the helmsman, Peter Burling, is aged only 26).

Granted, sailing infrastructure is excellent in New Zealand, but of course it still doesn't compare to the infrastructure and financial clout in the USA.

Also, there were three challengers at the last America's Cup in 2013. The challengers race for the Louis Vuitton Cup, the winners of which, earn the right to challenge the defenders for the America's Cup. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Louis_Vuitton_Cup

They had a private crane and she's at an expensive marina, private shed, huge engineering resources, no doubt the Americans have more dough, but the kiwis do okay

Sorry I worded my pay won't... They were the only real challengers to Oracle.

Pretty much like this time.

Oracle's team principal is kiwi. Half the crew is kiwi... Plus every team who had completed this year had either their whole boat, out significant probs of it but right here in NZ (in a factory up in Warkworth).

Despite the name on the Oracle team being USA.... It's not really that American.
