My quickest answer is to start with these two sites. I have consistently found this the best source of excellent, clearly explained recipes that work.
This is a public TV offshoot of Cook's Illustrated magazine. It is New England based, but they do good work with the other regions as well. You can get access to the last year of programming for ATK and Cook's Country for the past year without joining - there will be plenty here to start with.

I do, although it's harder now for Grandma to remember, and as frustrating as it can be to get directions like....
"stir it until it looks right" or "just add a dab of..."
