.....i’ve got one but we only ever ask about the weather.

My daughter reckons they listen to what folk are saying. Spooky.
Similar to many Smart TVs: they are passively listening for commands however what information they gather and store in the meantime is questionable.

Why does the CIA need spies when they've got Facebook and Alexa gathering copious amounts of information for them.

Apparently the Norwegian Intelligence service has been gathering info what is spoken in close proximity to their countries smart TVs -

In all seriousness, the mass interception and collection of data has taken place for years through other forms (Echelon for example) so it doesn't surprise me.

Smarts TVs, mobile phones, iPads, laptops et al. are all potentially liable to be used as a source of information. The question really is to what extent it occurs.

The security services and to a lesser extent the military are easily ten to twenty years ahead of what the common market have in regards to technology.

During Operation Banner, ANPR was being used during the 1980s whereas it only emerged here this century. Have you seen the recent gigapixel image?

People think it's remarkable that you can zoom in with so much detail but while it wasn't as clear, you could easily be seen from miles away - again back in the 80s.

‘What does it do?’

It listens in to everything you and your cronies say in earshot, whether that’s about criminal activity, diabolical schemes, erectile disfunction and/or anal itchiness etc.

You may as well have invited an Amazon employee in to your house to report on your behaviour.

Seems laughable now, but I remember at school several friends of mine were convinced the grounding wire on the Commodore 64 tape deck that had no apparent use was secretly informing government agencies when you used pirated software.
Suppose every technological era has its own paranoia complex.

Anybody got one of these? Wife bought me one for Christmas. What the fk do you use it for?

I bought the wife one for Christmas.

I rigged it up, simple enough job, then signed up for the 30 day free trial Amazon Music Unlimited.

We are having great fun with it:)

Basically it is a fancy version of Spotify.....shout a random song from thirty or more years ago and Alexa plays it.

And you use voice recognition to Google things instead of typing the question into your device.
