Methuselah

Player Valuation: £35m
Sorting out some old papers when I came across two old newspapers my (grown up) kids bought me some years ago. One was a Daily Herald published on the day I was born, the other was a Daily Express published on the day that war broke out. The latter was dated 4 September 1939 which happened to be a Monday, so it had the football results in from the Saturday. This was the season that started but didn't finish. Everton drew 2 - 2 away to Blackburn Rovers, Tommy Lawton scored both goals. Liverpool beat Chelsea 1 - 0 at Anfield in front of a crowd of 19,386. The highest gates were at Blackpool who beat Wolves 2 - 1 (20,000) and Arsenal who beat Sunderland 5 - 2 also 20,000. Blackpool were top of the league, played 3 won 3. Liverpool were 4th and Everton 5th, both on 4 points. 15 of the clubs in the old First Division are no longer in the Premiership. The leagues then were:
Division 1
Division 2
Division 3 north
Division 3 south

15 clubs in the above league structure no longer play in the football league. Some like New Brighton no longer exist, those that do, play in the Conference or below. Bournemouth, who played in division 3 south beat Northampton Town 10 - 0. The result table showed them as Boscombe, but the league table has them as Bournemouth. In the match reports, Arsenal are referred to as the 'Soccer glamour boys'. Ted Drake scored 4 of their 5 goals against Sunderland. Tranmere Rovers lost 2 - 0 to Chester.
