Alastair Cook has resigned as England Test captain.

Cook, 32, led his country in a record 59 Tests and skippered them to Ashes victories in 2013 and 2015.

However, during the 4-0 Test series defeat in India he admitted to having "questions" over his role, and has ended a reign that began in 2012.

"Stepping down has been an incredibly hard decision but I know this is the correct decision for me and at the right time for the team," said Cook.

"Playing for England really is a privilege and I hope to carry on as a Test player, making a full contribution and helping the next England captain and the team however I can."

Record number of tests captained, record number of ODIs captained and record runs and centuries scored for England.
A fine cricketer and captain.
Has probably picked his moment to step down well, couldn't have been a an easy decision for him, hope he goes on to score a lot more runs and contribute as a senior player for a few more years so least.

Very good batsman, average captain at best, was much better once his little gang of mates left and the moores II debacle was ended, seems a decent enough fella though, hopefully can have a strong finish to his career

...I think his record as a batsman is already up there with the best and if I remember rightly none of those at the top of the list were openers. It'll be interesting to see if releasing the burden of captaincy will push him even further up that chart. I suppose much will depend on how long he continues.
