Aliens

I gather we're playing an alien team at a neutral venue in the pre-season period.

Date to be arranged. I'm not sure who the opposition is. Possibly LA Galaxy.

It's written in the stars - aliens emerge out of deep space and orbit intimidatingly around Earth. They announce that their vastly superior technology could decimate our species in minutes, but as they are good sports, they'll offer us a one-off match of association football. If they win, the Earth is theirs. If the Earth team wins, the aliens vow to jog on. So, one of their professional teams versus a randomly-selected professional team from Earth. Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier are on hand to pull the balls out of the bag, and number 69 - Everton are chosen to represent Earth. A simultaneous collective groan of resignation comes from every Evertonian, knowing what's to come.

...there is a 3 week build up to the match, everyone on Earth are behind Everton, our players get all sorts of free stuff (including snow-white velvet jogging suits with personalised monograms), mass support everywhere they go, celebrity endorsements from Hollywood A-listers, a training camp in La Manga and warm up matches against a Singapore XI and Tranmere - the full works.

When it comes down to the match, the lads are in great shape and put in a superb performance, storming to a 3-0 half time lead.

...anyway, this is Everton in literally a game of life and death, so we go on to lose the match in spectacularly unfortunate / shoot-yourself-in-the-foot / last minute complete reversal fashion and mankind is vaporised. Everton that.

Back in the early 90's i seen a spaceship it was hovering over my house with it's bright lights looking for a stolen car
i went out and shook my fist at it

not sure really. When you look at how random and lucky it was for life to start on this planet i wouldnt be suprised if we are currently the only life out there

There is nothing lucky or random about us being here. A certain set of conditions were in place to allow life to begin. Those same conditions are a statistical certainty to exist many times over in our galaxy, our local group and our supercluster.

Just because we haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. In fact with current technology and our current grasp of physics, we will unlikely, as a species, witness any sort of life out there (space is pretty big yanno) unless they are very close by.

If there are aliens watching us, then they have mastered science to a level beyond us, and possibly have a culture more mature too. They must watch down on us for entertainment, like some kind of reality show involving cock fighting and drugged apes and torture.
Bet they've all got season tickets at Goodison.:)

given all the planets that NASA keep discovering and claiming that they are in a habitable zone from their star, so could support life, I think it is increasingly likely that there is life out there on other planets. The real question is, is what form does that life take? Is it just bacteria? fish, small mammals? Reptiles? Then, is there intelligent life? is it comparable to us? more advanced? more primitive?

I think it was interesting what Stephen Hawking said, basically if they come to earth and make contact with us first, it will probably be the end of us, because if they can come half way across the Universe it wont be to say "hello".....

That'd be one in the eye for the rs.
"we've come 200 light years to watch this blue team. Above all others there is something special there as we have followed them from the beginning."

To be honest mate I was referring more to your comments about cock fighting, drugged apes and torture.;)
