Algiers and surrounding areas

Thinking about going to Algiers or surrounding area for a few days. Anybody been? Any recommendations?

I have wanted to go ever since I watched the Battle of Algiers in French class as a 15 year old. Pretty sure you want to be careful in the surrounding areas as there's a heightened risk of kidnap and terrorism. Some poor Frenchman got kidnapped and decapitated a couple years back hiking around the mountains near the Roman ruins.

Some decent tour operators offer trips to Algiers and Algeria generally though. I went to Libya on holiday a few months before the revolution and it was one of the most interesting places I've ever visited, with what were at the time totally unspoiled but deserted magnificent Roman ruins.

Yeah I just was looking for unusual stuff to do. I can get a ferry there from Spain where I live in ten hours. Thought might be interesting trip just don't know anything about it at all

I wouldn't touch anywhere in North Africa with a barge pole. Crawling with militant groups these days.

Morocco is perfectly safe. Tunisia has been decimated by the attacks but they have a bunch of police and army about so would be a dirt cheap holiday and actually very safe now. If we abandon these places then they’re more likely to become insular and breeding grounds for those sorts of groups.
