I first saw Alan Ball in the 1968/69 season when I was a nipper. I raved about him constantly. My dear departed Dad would be forever be saying you should have seen Alex Young though son. I just missed out on him, but my Dad would always tell me he was his favourite ever player in a Blue shirt. Gutted I also missed Ball & Young together. I've heard stories about how good they were in tandem.

There's a clip on vimeo; EFC V'S Untd, first game of the new season 67-68. They were the Champions, we ripped them a new one.
Young scores a cracker of a 3rd and at various stages you see him covering and tackling back at both RB & LB - and winning the ball then setting off down the wing

The Golden Vision, what a player! I was lucky enough to see him play for a couple of years1 My Dad who watched Everton from the late 1940's through to 2006 said he was the best player he ever saw play in an Everton shirt - and he saw a few good ones!

Cheers bud. I have seen that clip too. Brilliant. I've also see bits from the 'golden vision' documentary but didn't ever see him 'live' in action. Still have Bally as my favourite ever player though.

One of my greatest memories is of having a jimmy riddle with Alex and Jimmy Gabriel,at St Philomenas Club at the Old Roan. Part of the conversation,as we stood at neighbouring stalls was as follows from JG...'What does it feel like having a piss with two Scottish Internationalists ?' Before I could answer AY said 'Who's the second one?'

Another name I've not seen mentioned in this excellent thread.... Bobby Collins....the 'catalyst' who was the pioneering player at the start of the 'modern ' Everton.....when the best players wanted to play for us and we were feared by everyone. A stocky little guy, but fit as a fluke with a great football brain and great feet. Never forget his back heeled goal into the Park End. Another that we sold too soon.
