Alcholism

Perhaps its learned behaviour from early life, what everyone does or how everyone else behaves?

Therapy is most certainly helpful. As Dddddd says hobbies are also helpful. I used to find drinking came when i had nothing else to do at night, particularly if id had a difficult day. Rewiring your.mind to think differently and approach problems in another way taught me. I use exercise to beat down the path of negativity.

I dont think its just men either..

From my own experiences, I`d say this is definitely a contributing factor.

Virtually everyone I know, who`s been brought up in a household where everyone drinks all the time and a drink is always available, seems to have carried on in the same way. This is despite family members dying early of alcohol related illnesses and suffering health problems of their own too as a result.

Women seem to hide it better than fellas too - a bottle of wine over the course of the night, without getting drunk. Then over the course of time, the bottle gets opened earlier and earlier, one bottle becomes two and before they know it, they`re drinking during the day too.

No matter how hard I try to give up alcohol I'm always drawn back to it. It messes up my life, I feel it's a cultural thing with me, born to Serbian parents it was a natural reaction to hit drink at 1st sign of problems. Is drinking a cultural problem or do you think men need more speaking therapy?
I’ve got a load of medical issues which are made much worse by alcohol, so I’m more or less sober, I can have a few but avoid beer, among the few lads I am still mates with, then amount of lads who can’t have an open conversation until they are leathered is really sad, the lifestyles of the western world is based on drinking, it’s a cultural construct and woven directly into mens culture.

“Just have a Bev’”.

First very important step right there - you've recognised the issue.

I'd talk to your GP in the first instance if you are worried. Alcohol usage to deal with 'problems' is common with various other mental health ailments such as anxiety, depression, which broadly cone under 'stress'. Sometimes it's about recognising the signs and dealing with the wifee issue or finding other coping mechanisms.

Running for me. I'm too fat and wheezy to have energy to drink after dragging my carcass around.

God speed!

I’m just about to leave my house to get the coach to our clubs last game of the season today ….. load of the lads have been in the pub since 9am and have cans for the bus…. Years ago I’d have been right in there with them … today I wil be travelling with a bottle of water and a lion bar. I’ll probably have a couple of pints after the game but will be home in time for the boxing tonight. Lost all interest in going to the pub in the last year or so…. Just find it incredibly boring a waste of money.

I think it`s an age thing too.

You just kind of grow out of stuff and lose interest as you get older.

I used to love going out and getting leathered.

But as I`ve got older, I still love going out, but don`t get leathered anymore, just sticking to 2/3 beers over the course of the night and if I`m on a big one with mates, I`ll stop drinking altogether and switch to soft drinks.

I think the turning point for me, was my first kid, as hangovers and having to look after a baby / young kid, led to a day of hell, the day after.

I just cut right down and never really went back to my old days of drinking after that.

In saying that, out of all my mates, some of whom were massive boozers, there`s only one still at it and he lives in the middle of nowhere, but next door to a pub

I'm getting old so many things are different these days. I find it is the early evenings when I start craving a cider or a Guinness. Even though I would only have one or two I have tried to cut down on the days when that happens. I have found alternative "grown up" alcohol-free drinks help. Alcohol free "gins" are actually pretty good. Some of them anyway, particularly when added to a good quality mixer and ice ...
