We would get snow as early as October in Connecticut. However, in Connecticut the coldest it gets is around 10 degree's F, here in Fairbanks it is not unusual to see -40 and sometimes as low as -60 (according to a guy on the plane who has lived here for over 40 years!!!)
And for those who care what type of plane it is, I looked up its registration number (N12347) and found it to be a Douglas DC-6A which was built in 1953.
As an aside; doing some light poking around, it kind of appears that plane belonged to the Dpt. of Commerce's National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association and, if so, was probably used in research.
Haha...wonders of the web. Yup that first photo shows the Everts Air Fuel sign, which is the registered owner, and they're a participant with the NOAA. Actually, it looks like they're the logistics headquarters which means it was more than likely just a cargo carrier. Interesting anyhow. You heading back tomorrow?
