So I am about to add a *bunch* of miles to my Alaska Airlines account with a trip to North Pole (yes, there is a town in Alaska called North Pole) via Fairbanks.

I was up there at the beginning of August and this is what I saw:

So I was actually working at North Pole High School. Programming the leading edge lighting control system for the whole campus (and integrating it with a central location so they can control the lights at 2 other schools as well as this one via a clever thing know as a network!!!). As I am going around the school I notice all the awesome TV's that are in every classroom. They really spared no expense at this school!!!

After the first day of work I go for dinner then go for a drive. I am driving the roads to the north of Fairbanks at around 9pm (bare in mind the sun doesn't set in the summer until around 1-2am, then rises at 2-3am as in IT IS ALWAYS DAYTIME!!!!) Driving around I actually saw one of those things that make you say 'Only in Alaska' Yep, came around a corner and there was A FREAKING AIRPLANE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!!! Naturally I had to stop and take a pic!

Then I continued on my way and passed an old Gold Dredge and the 'Howling Dog Saloon' which was obviously a class establishment!

And now a picture of what I come home to :D

Pictures from my trip to Santa's House will come in a little while after the sproggles are in bed.

Well, when I am up there next week I will take more pictures, although I imagine it will be with snow present. And I am finding the airplane again. And then I am going right up to it and taking a million pictures of it from all angles.

Gobsmacked there mate, do the people there all wear check shirts and beards and have teeth missing from Saturday night fights in the Howling Dog?

And yeah,, i,m including the women aswell !!!!

Yep. The place fits the stereotype perfectly. Although not everyone has a beard. They do all wear flannel 'lumberjack' shirts with camouflage ball caps.

Hilarious about the airplane and TV's.

How far from Fairbanks were you? I've always assumed the bigger cities in Alaska were just like the cities/towns in the lower 48.

North Pole is about 15 miles east of Fairbanks. And yes, Fairbanks/Anchorage/Ketchikan are all just like medium-sized towns (although Anchorage is the biggest city in Alaska). Although the San Fernando Valley here in LA has a higher population that whole state of Alaska.........

so these folk that walk to the NP would be far better off departing from Fairbanks ? I reckon I could do it from there and be back for tea.

I'm expecting a pic like this btw from your visit, it was clouded out in Bergen when we played there.
