Wally downes was his mate and worked with pardew (at reading i think )and was a coach at west ham , when they played Newcastle over a post match drink downes had a bit of a moan about big Sam & pardew is supposed to have passed that on to Sam and downes left west ham by mutual consent . I'm Pretty sure that didn't do much for pardews popularity in the game.
