'TV funnyman' Alan Davies is set to provoke a storm of protest for a foul-mouthed rant criticising Liverpool Football Club's refusal to play on the anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster.

He ranted: "Liverpool and the 15th -- that gets on my tits that ****. What are you talking about, 'We won't play on the day'. Why can't they?"

Laughing nervously, one of his co-presenters, Ian Stone, tried to point out why Liverpool FC don't take a business-as-usual approach to the most painful day in the club's history, saying: "Because it's too sad a memory."

But that simple and obvious explanation failed to deter Davies, who was on a roll.

He said: "Do they play on the date of the Heysel Stadium disaster? How many dates do they not play on? Do Man United play on the date of Munich? Do Rangers play on the date when all their fans died in that disaster whatever year that was - 1971?"

I thought they had an annual service at Anfield on the 15th every year? Certainly home games would be hard to play anyway for obvious reasons. I don't see what's wrong with choosing to dedicate the day to something ultimately far more important than a football match anyway; I think it's a bit odd that somebody would criticise something that's completely harmless and risk the controversy that comes with it.

He knows it create a talking point and get people talking about him (like now)

Bet you a quid hes got a new show coming out or stand up tour

Never seen it as a problem them not playing on the 15th, if they would all rather be at Anfield with family and friends and mourn there loved ones thats fine by me

for me it isnt about if he is right or wrong....and for me it doesnt matter if they play then or not but I quite like the idea of less "LFC love" in the media.

Apparently A LOT of people currently on Twitter have responded by saying that his comments have been "taken out of context" and the article "only used selected quotes"..

Totally the wrong thing though

All for the press treating them for what they are which is a mid table team (the table doesent lie)

But using Hillsbrough to beat them with is a bellends trick cos he knows it will get press coverage

I sort of agree with him, in that if they do that for one day then they should do it for Heysel as well.

However, he's a grade-A ****ehawk to use that to beat them with. It's something that goes beyond agreeing or disagreeing really.
