AFCON - Have the top PL sides got rid?

Player Valuation: £70m
A few years ago most of the PL's top sides had at least a couple of African born players. Now it's only really Arsenal that have many of note.

Is this a co-incidence or a deliberate attempt by managers to limit the effects the AFCON has on thier season?

I was thinking that it could be a big boost for us as we won't have anyone leaving this Jan but looking at it neither will most of our opposition.

I know the cream will always rise but could this lead to the tournament being rescheduled if La Liga was to follow suit?

Edit: Just read back what I'd written and it was uteer sh*te. Disjointed sentences and irrelevant points.

Apologies.

We would've lost Pienaar if they'd qualified and I think Anichebe, provided his injury isn't too bad, will probably go, leaving us short of forward options.

I don't think United have ever lost a player to the AFCON, Quinton Fortune maybe? City will lose the Toure brothers and Chelsea will be without Obi Mikel.

I think the only major difference will be Drogba as he was always a huge loss for Chelsea, but obviously he's not there anymore.

I was just about to say, Sir Alex hardly ever buys African players, I'm guessing this is a big reason for it. I remember one year when Portsmouth were doing poorly just before they plummeted and then half of their first team left for a month.

Never been a fan of the AFCON being mid season.

I think in the future that managers will request retirement from international football if they want to come to the Premier League.

Not formally, but it'll be made obvious during contract negotiations, and ultimately that'll relegate the ACN to domestic players from those countries - until they do the obvious and bring the timetable in line with the European footballing calendar.

If you want a top job, you should be willing to give up a few perks.

Probably could be said of all players in truth but the african players often get accused of a more 'carefree' attitude towards the game than others. I wonder if they like that you get a month away from England at a time when the fixtures come thick and fast and the weathers atrocious.

I remember one in particular was in no rush to return.

It's an interesting point.

It's no doubt something which factors into negotiations and the attractiveness of buying African players. But then if they're of a certain quality, they won't be passed on.

So I doubt the ACoN would stop Chesea buying the next Drogba, but perhaps it would put them off the next John Obi Mikel.

The interesting thing, of course, is that already exsts. There's a domestic players only verison that is held in the alternate years to the main competition.

I've always thought it would be really funny if they held that one during the summer, to be honest.

a large group of talented african born players have turned 30 plus and the younger generation hasnt blossomed in the same numbers.
