So, I’m currently in a job that I really don’t like. I’ve been here just over 3 years now and it’s my only job (I’m 21).

There are a few positives to the job; it’s a few minutes away from my home- me and my girlfriend just got a mortgage near here. I work 4 days instead of 5 (6:30-5 are the hours so still a full week condensed down). I do also get on well with my team leader.

However, there are more negatives, it’s a factory job which I really don’t like, I’m relied on way too much and do the job of others because I can work faster than anyone in my room. But I get paid the same as my co workers, obviously less than the assistant, who is way worse at the job than me. I just also feel like I need a change, every might, every weekend I absolutely dread it and had it in my head all over Christmas.

Now I have the responsibility of having a mortgage, so I’m now worried about leaving my current job.

What do you suggest I do? Really struggling to know what I want to do next too...

These feel like the two crucial things to focus on here.

If you were paid more for your work, would it change how you feel?

If the answer is no, then leave. If the answer is yes, and it's actually about how you're valued, then you need to focus on that.

The 2nd phrase, can you evidence this in some way? Are there targets or KPI's for you both to focus on? Is yours consistently better than theirs?

The best way to argue for a raise or a promotion, the absolute best way, is to let numbers do your talking (as this is nearly always what management want to see).

X is paid this, for this level of output. I am paid this, for this level of output. It becomes a very simple decision.Nobody cares about the emotional side of things, it's business.

If you're working harder and producing better results, it's fair you should be rewarded accordingly. If you're being paid the same and the business refuse to raise your pay or give you a pathway to promotion, then they can expect your quality and quantity of work to fall in line with those around you. Which takes the pressure off yourself, and is a consequence for the business that they'd probably rather avoid.

Have a think about what you want from this. Do you want the raise, do you want less pressure or do you simply want to leave?

Nobody can answer those questions other than you.

Stab your team leader in the back (not literally) by showing his superiors how bad he is at the job. Step into his shoes and salary, and gain the respect of your colleagues by leading even handedly. It's dog eat dog out there, stand up for yourself as much as you can.
