Advice On Being Teetotal

As someone who is going to have to give up alcohol for the greater good - it would be nice to hear from those who don’t drink (by either choice or necessity).

How long have you not been drinking? How does it affect your social life? How do you unwind after a rubbish week? Do you have any tips?

Thanks in advance :)

Well in mate ;)

I'm not teetotal but do go quite long periods without drinking, alcohol for me now is only consumed at stags, weddings and Christmas, just been to what I reckon will be my last stag, have 3 weddings this year between April and June so that will be it then till Christmas. It doesn't even cross my mind when there is nothing on. I much rather hanging out at home with the family.

I rarely drink and can go months without it. It doesn't bother me at all. I can have one and then move to on to just a coke or whatever and I prefer it that way tbh. I've never liked alcohol particularly in the first place so I ain't gonna let myself feel forced into something I dont even enjoy!

I feel plenty only drink to excess cause they feel pressured into it. I couldn't care less if mates, or work mates or whoever think I'm weird. I can work that out for myself lol

I only drink in moderation now mate, as hangovers massively kick off my anxiety the following day - “ the fear “ Plus I do a lot of running which help keep the lid on my anxiety too and it knackers my training.

The hardest part I found was the peer pressure that came with not drinking. The worst being from my missus and her piss head parents.
( I quite enjoy it as I know it winds them up )

It took a while but everyone accepts now that if I say No it means No.

I've gone dry a few times. Currently on a stint which was unplanned after illness. Didn't drink for a while then just decided to keep off it - noticed weight loss as well as being less grouchy.

I've honestly not missed it. I'd go out with the missus on a sat afternoon/ evening and drink, but we just go go for a meal and the cinema now. Any drinking at home used to accompany footie, a box set or a film. Well, I can do that without.

On the topic of unwinding - I'm ambivalent about this, it's nice to have the odd beer with mates, but i know if I need it to de-stress then there's something not right.

Yeah the tough part for me will be that all of the social activities I have a chance to partake in centre heavily around drinking. This will be the biggest test.

My dad’s been off it about 35 years. I think dedication to this goal is a big part of his success. Accountability helps. I’m sure exercise helps relieve stress also, is that what cheese suggested?

My problem is that I really do miss it. Really enjoyed a Sunday evening with my ex going to the cinema and a meal, but sooner or later I’d miss it. Used to drink and take cocaine alone at home - and I loved it. Think that is compelling evidence that I’m not someone who should be drinking.
