Advice from anyone involved in motoring insurance please

Read the small print in any car insurance offer before agreeing to take it on… and never automatically renew.
Get fresh quotes after 11 months and don’t be afraid to haggle.

From personal experience, I would recommend Direct Line… they might not be the cheapest but, if you have or are involved in a bump, their repair, replacement vehicle and support services are excellent, very efficient in keeping you advised of everything related to your claim.

As @chrismpw says, insurance is something of a necessary evil but, do your research and don’t just go for the cheapest !!

The LV did me a good payout when they indirectly paid a claim out when my son had a knock in my wife's car air bags went off & they just accepted the claim from the other car with out out statement - immediately I asked for a Manager as protocol had been broken e.g. us not being able to put our case forward e.g. they had jumped the gun & accepted that my son was in the wrong without his statement of the accident -

Put a complaint in ASAP - they wrote the car off I had paid £5700 for it 6 months earlier I bargained a pay off of £5, 500 £ 1000 higher using dropping the complaint as a bargain chip .....

Never accept the first offer...
Plus install front & rear dash cam cameras as one the prove who is at fault in any accident plus if you have them it lowers your insurance premium - Do not use Halfords.... they fit them disgustingly & customer care does not exist - plus their dash cams are cheap rubbish ... be warned trust me on that one ....

Also breakdown best NO 1 company is GEM - Independent from insurance firms plus cheapest & best you will find .....

Then talk directly to your insurer… or contact the Insurance Ombudsman 👍
Ombudsman is only a referee = no power , but if he finds in your favour you then have to threaten to pursue in the civil court ... unless the insurance just pay out which is rare in most cases....

A handy threat that's all Ombudsmen do for you also can make your claims process long winded, but handy to have if they back your case ....

I take legal cover on my car & house insurance & threaten to use them excess is £100 with a claim up to 100 grand - worth it

Cheers @chrismpw and @AndyC but am more after advice about putting in a claim in unusual circumstances (which I don’t want to elaborate on publicly) and the likelihood of it being accepted or rejected.
Understood.

So you "slipped" getting into the car, and the fire service had to be called to cut off the gear stick so you could be taken away to have it removed? Understood. That repair could be pricey.

@Bungle is your man here

The only advice I can really offer is that leaving the handbrake off and intentionally letting a ford mondeo roll slowly down the driveway until the tow bar penetrates your anus does warrant a personal injury claim apparently, probably should have had the foresight to hide the bottle of astroglide lube before the insurance inspector came out.
