Morning lids and lidettes - My missus has a 19 year old lad that has just finished full time education. He's a really shy, quite socially awkward lad (doesn't have many friends, a bit nerdy, hasn't had much 'life experience' - suffered from anxiety and other bits earlier on in life)

He's a fully qualified personal trainer - but lacking in confidence around this (mainly due to a large chunk of his learning being virtual rather than practical) and we've been trying to find a job for him that will help boost his confidence and get one foot onto the employment ladder

Eventually he'd like to become a full time trainer, but we think it's probably useful to get him started in employment for the routine, personal responsibility, time management elements etc

Does anybody have any suggestions for good first time job roles? Or know of any positions currently available?

Cheers

A shy, 19yo personal trainer?

I’m sure @Bungle will have some work for him…

If he's socially awkward a job in a pub/restaurant where you have to work with the public will help him overcome that fear. He'll also learn to hate the general public.

On a serious note this is decent advice and advice I wish I took when I was 19. I'm still an anxiety riddled dysfunctional moron but I've been deliberately putting myself in uncomfortable social situations for 2-3 years now, doing things I'd normally have made an excuse not to attend, be it work related or a friends party etc. It'll make a huge difference if you can get him to do the same and offer up support and encouragement.

It'll also be a great way to make some new mates and will serve him well when it comes to training people one on one in the future when he's feeling more confident.

There are some good apprenticeships out there. Some awful, but some are okay if living at home.

I think our work pays about £6 an hour and a few people have gone to to have £20kish jobs at the firm within 2-3 years.

Perhaps something in hospitality. It helped me no end when I was 16. I mean I used to be a bag of nerves before every shift for the first year but once I got over that... :D

But, if he's a qualified personal trainer there's nothing wrong with him putting that to good use either.

Get himself on social media, advertise himself - it's free, even if it's just for one-on-one sessions outdoors, running coaching etc. Plenty of opportunities out there.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with wanting to do what you're good at first off if the opportunity is there. Plus, that type of initiative would be looked on fondly by potential employers down the line.

Not work related but will he not join a sports club? Like a running club if he's into his fitness or something? Make some new mates etc.

Also, send him into the forces for a few years.

Good luck to the lad though, life's a slaughterhouse.

Join the military. I I’ll build his confidence no end. Join the submarine service and he will be picking up 25k a year in 18 months.
