With supermarkets, 'clubcards' etc aren't really for loyalty. It was an easy way to combine data mining and loyalty schemes. It's both incredibly clever, and a little bit disconcerting, how big companies set up based on that data.
That's 100% what they are for. Loyalty my arse. You need a million points to buy a toaster ffs. Supermarkets plan their marketing activity and future products based on this loyalty data, they also keep individual records of your spending habits so they know which junkmail to send to your house. Very intrusive, and the main reason I won't get one.
