Can't bring myself to think about football blather right now. It just brings misery.

Quite apart from those adverts on TV getting more frequent and broadcast more loudly... . Do they have an effect on you? Have you ever bought a product based solely on the fact that you've seen an advert? Are you open to the powers of suggestion, or these Jedi mind tricks?

I ask because I don't, and I'm amazed that adverts must work, otherwise companies wouldn't throw money at TV channels to fund them. Adverts just pass me by. Without trying now, I filter them out. I've even got in trouble at work because I've missed a message, because now I automatically don't read the top half of a first page (frigging corporate mission statements) , or those highlighted, large print or colourful bits of text that try to catch my eye.

I'll go further and say that I've made an observation: nothing that's advertised is any good. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a good quality product being advertised on the telly? Rolls Royce? Aston Martin? Sawdust? My thinking is that they'll only spend money on stuff that isn't selling.

I've even got to the point where I've avoided buying products I was set to buy BECAUSE I've seen an advert for it.

What does it say that (in my experience) the majority of adverts (and the majority of hight Street shops) are for products aimed at women?

As I write this I’m looking at an advert below your post that says “Neymar cut from roster - leaves football early and heads for retirement..”.

I now want to buy him based on this advert, as a present to Everton F.C. for Christmas.

Advertising works!!

just bought an all in one mitt, that works as a pet comb and oven glove and I think I can buff the car with it (according to the advert)

Adverts are a pretty blunt instrument tbh. Far subtler, and more effective, are things retailers do once we're in store (or on the website) to encourage us to do certain things.
Like putting soft things such as loaves and lettuces near the entrance, so you pick them up first and crush them with the rest of your shopping? Having odd numbered aisles, so you have to go down one of them at least twice? Putting things in odd places, so customers have to spend time looking for them, viewing other stuff in the meantime? "Accidentally" pricing shelves differently (lower) that what's rung up at the till. Pricing large or double packs at more than twice the cost of small or single packs, because they know people will automatically assume the bulk pack will be better value.?

Just tricks I 've noticed over the years. Why can they just be happy with people buying what they need, and stop faffing everybody around? Make an honest living Ffs.

I'm no expert by any means, but I believe the fruit & veg is put near the entrance because it makes the shop seem fresh and welcoming. Likewise, the bakery is designed for the nose, as the smell of fresh bread is also supposed to be enticing. That's why Subway et al make sure they pump that smell outside to try and lure people in.

And that's just offline. The likes of Amazon and Netflix are masters at designing a website that gets you buying stuff.

I must be oblivious to them. Never bought a product I hadn't been looking for. I've noticed that everybody in a netflix made film seem to use an apple laptop, carefully shown in every pertinent scene. Again, oblivious to that,as I'd never buy into the massively overpriced, locked down and inflexible apple scene.

Checkatrade, checkatrade.com !!
Just had to fill my bin with another of their fliers.

Again, how is that supposed to work? Do people buy into it? As i see it, a bunch if middlemen run the organisation, take a welly full of cash from their subscribers, who in return for cash get listed so people assume they must be good. Those skilled tradesmen who don't buy into the scheme stand to lose business for not paying into the protection racket .if you but in,you buy a good reputation. ..so why would anybody pay checkatrade any credence?

I cetainly wouldn't use it to find a tradesman, I'd use personal recommendations,or recommendations from friends via public media.
