Back in 1971, I was on the M1 driving north to Leeds. It was the days before crash barriers on the central reservation. I was in the fast lane, knocking on a bit, when a car suddenly appeared broadside in the fast lane about 100 yards ahead. I didn't even have time to get my foot on the brake before I hit him. Chopped his car in two. Engine and front wheels went one way, the rest of the car from the windscreen back went the other. I kept going but as I had no front wheels I was a passenger. I slid across to the hard shoulder and stopped. Missed the last three games of that football season, but it could have been worse. They were known as 'crossover crashes' in those days. Still have neck trouble (whiplash) nearly 50 years later.

Got to say, I love reading your posts

Did a stack jump once in the black mountains near crickhowel landed the jump off balance and fell backwards off the slab.

Fell about 20 metres whilst doing an uncontrolled full backward somersault and somehow miraculously hit a rock outcrop landing on my arse (right on the bony bit)!

Rolled down the slope for about another 10 metres before coming to a gentle halt. Hurt like crazy and I was limping like an old man for about 2 weeks after, but lucky to be alive.

I went into shock a few hours after the event, my mate noticed it and drove me to a local B&B and pleaded with the owner to throw me fully clothed into a hot bath and probably saved my life I reckon.

I still get the shivers to this day when I think about what could have happened to me that day.

Commuting between school sites on a drizzly Monday lunchtime, I came off a roundabout in my twitchy tailed reliant scimitar. I skidded broadside and T boned a Mercedes Actross juggernaut. I blinked, and when I opened my eyes my first thought was 'its light in here'.

The fire service had cut my roof off and were just about to lift me out of the car. I blinked again and was in the hospital bed. Nowt but a cut on my shoulder and concussion, fortunately. My scimitar was, obviously, totalled. Main road was shut for around 2 hours.

The next morning I asked the nurse when would I be leaving, she answered, 'as soon as possible, we need the bed'.

In my concussed state I took that as read, phoned a pal who picked me up an hour later. I left my keys and everything else behind and wandered out of the ward and went home in my hospital robes!!

The only thing I remember as being odd, were two rozzers who were there as I woke up, saying there were witnesses saying I was only doing around 20mph, and the road wasn't oily or anything and they were leaving it at that.

The road wasn't oily eh? Programme a concussion victim with apparently random inflormation that gets the authorities off any potential litigation eh?

Similar here mate, but not me, my mate.

Free climbing as teenagers on Holy Head Mountain

I made it to the top of the section that we were on, he grabbed the lip of the ridge at the top and it came away in his hands.

He actually started to grab thin air as he fell backwards.

To this day I have no idea how I reacted so quickly and grabbed his wrist / hand and pulled him back into the rock face.

No more free climbing after that lol
