well, what a game that was, and like so often the referee was instrumental in aiding the opposition to victory.
arsenals first goal, arteta penalised for an arm in the face (fancy that) on our right wing halfway into the arsenal half. free kick arsenal, hoofed up field and finished well.
never a freekick in the first place.
martin atkinson 1 everton 1
arsenals second goal, clear handball by teduardo, nothing given, great finish.
martin atkinson 2 everton 1
nicklas bendtner not content with talking himself into a yellow card after kicking out at yobo then gives johnson a thankyou for the winning goal last season by stamping on his knee and following through all the way down his shin to his ankle. the kind of tackle wenger cries about except when its one of his stars doing the assaulting. atkinson brandishes a second yellow card which means a one game ban for bendtner.
another decision by atkinson that belies his true motivation.
then we get to the real horror show, arteta and fabregas tussle, arms across each other suddenly fabregas falls to his knees clutching his face and rolls over five times. (david ginola would be proud) there was no elbow, there was no powerful contact, what there was was a straight red for arteta which means a three game ban. fabregas gets up and continues playing.
another decision by atkinson that belies his true motivation.
in the aftermath of the arteta red card, exactly why was it toure went steaming into cahill? oh for the days of ferguson, parkinson, (dare i say speed) reid or even gravesen. toure should have been given a reminder of his mortality right there and then.
in the face of such adversity our lads couldnt cope, it was 11 vs 12 from the start.
(although it wasnt a penalty, when yakubu tussled with toure when he was in on goal, the initial contact occured outside the box, but on derby day the player in red that went down after contact with hibbert won a penalty - hibbert got sent off. where is the consistency?)
and just for a laugh, wasnt it ironic that the man rewarded with the england captaincy for his weekly use of the elbows had the nerve to criticise arteta for use of the (straight) arm whilst punditting on match of the day.
