I thought that after yet another disappointing result this season, I’d compare this season to previous seasons under Moyes to see just how bad things really are in terms of our goal scoring ability.
Using the league tables from previous years available from Wikipedia I have found the goals scored and the goals conceded by us from 2002/2003 until this season, it makes fairly depressing reading.
Season, Final Position, Goals Scored, Goals Against, Av Scored/ Match, Av Against/ Match, W/O Arsenal (09/10)
02/03 7 48 49 1.26 1.29
03/04 17 45 57 1.18 1.50
04/05 4 45 46 1.18 1.21
05/06 11 34 49 0.89 1.29
06/07 6 52 36 1.37 0.95
07/08 5 55 33 1.45 0.87
08/09 5 55 37 1.45 0.97
09/10 8 60 49 1.58 1.29 1.16
10/11 - 28 30 1.17 1.25
Av - 49.25 44.50 1.27 1.17 1.16
So on average we score 48 goals per season under Moyes and concede 44 goals, of course this ignores any changes in personnel and such. We can see from the table that we are scoring at the second slowest rate in the data, with only the 2005/2006 season scoring fewer.
If we compare the averages from this season to even last season we see that although we are conceding fewer goals than then we are also scoring much fewer, although if we exclude last season’s opening fixture, we concede less goals. Using the averages from this season we should score roughly 44 goals and concede 48, giving us a final goal difference of somewhere around -4.
Similarly if we continue to score points at the same rate as we have so far for the rest of the season, we should end up on 43 points overall which typically equates to finishing around 13th or 14th.
