It's to get you to watch the ads that are shown with the programme, as the ads are the thing that pay for everything.

I always thought it was anything made by Netflix..5 star. Anything not made by Netflix...not 5 star.

Fair dinkum ? I've actually avoided watching stuff only rated 1 star and such thinking it'll just be a waste of time. lol
 
Thought it was obvious after a while of use. Though I can see why it's confusing at first.

I love the system personally as their algorithms are spot on, once you rate a lot of stuff. I usually find the rating they give something is almost exactly what I give it when I'm done watching.

I'm kind of peeved to see a thumbs up system replacing it. Everything these days has to be good or bad, yes or no, black or white.
