Player Valuation: £100m
I hope the fans who are feeling negative about the clubs lack of transfer activity (and Martinez himself) can have some good news soon. The fact Martinez has publically said he wants 3 players and lists their positions is very exciting indeed (he also ststed he wanted to see how the young players were doing in pre-season)....whats equally as interesting is that 5 players will run out of contract next season so lots of changes coming....here's the current core of quality:

GK -- ??? / Robles
LB -- Baines / Garbutt
LCB -- Jagielka / Galloway
RCB -- Stones / Browning
RB -- Coleman / ???
DM -- McCarthy /Besic
CM -- Barkley / Cleverley
AM -- ??? / ???
LW -- Mirallas / ???
RW -- Deulofeu / ???
FW -- Lukaku / ???

Now, at the risk of being all FM here (well its clearly FM!)and also in the event these rumours dont eventuate into actual signings just imagine the squad we would have if these players (OR SIMILAR quality players) were added to the squad....because he's obviously identified these types of players:

GK -- ??? / Robles
LB -- Baines / Garbutt
LCB -- Jagielka / Galloway
RCB -- Stones / Browning
RB -- Coleman / ???
DM -- McCarthy /Besic
CM -- Barkley / Cleverley
AM -- Shaqiri / ???
LW -- Mirallas / ???
RW -- Deulofeu / ???
FW -- Lukaku / Austin

If the out of contract players all left next summer we would still have the following on our books:

Howard
Oviedo
Barry
Naismith
McGeady
McAleny

They should all be punted other than Oviedo who would be kept as a squad player perhaps.

Next season we have even more TV money and hopefully a larger pot due to a higher finishing position....we would just need to fill:

Keeper -- The top keepers around seem to be available at £15mil+. I'm not saying we would be able to attract a world class keeper but thats not a huge amount based on the money around at the moment. This would make a huge difference to the team and i expect Martinez to make a big splash here which is why he pulled out of signing someone in January and is giving Howard another season so he can save up his kitty and identify a truly top notch keeper (theres a few very highly rated on the continent who need a season or two more of consistency so hopefully he has his eyes on them)

Right back -- Specialist cover is needed for Coleman. Whether this is Kenny, Browning, Pennington or another player its possible we could fill this internally. It seems though that the younger players are more suited to playing centre back.

Attacking midfielder/winger -- The potential signing of Shaqiri is interesting because along with Mirallas he can play several attacking roles...however even if he did sign we would have Mirallas, Deulofeu and him but no real top cover for them or even a rotation option...so, no matter who we sign here we need another winger and certainly another ball player such as Halilovic for a very strong squad.

So, going off Martinez' comments and if the CB is merely a loan signing (with eyes on Browning and Galloway to come into contention over 12months) we would be a keeper and two attacking midfielders away from having what appears to be ON PAPER a very good squad.comparable to anyone in the league and at an age where it can continue to improve.

Again, if these precise players (Shaqiri/Austin) arent signed BUT similar players do come in we are potentially 3 signings from the best squad in decades.

If Martinez is able to accomplish 2 key signings this summer and also the same quality with 3 next summer then he will have completely transformed the squad left to him by Moyes in 3 seasons.

It's also exciting to read about Dowell, Walsh, Ledson and others coming through who can fill out the squad even more so when we are back in Europe we have a large enough squad of quality...

Surely its worth the wait to sign the right players this summer to ensure that we only need 3 players next summer to complete his rebuilding strategy? If Martinez is able to make the right signings in the next 3 weeks then i firmly believe we will be in a position where the squad is of such high quality we will be shopping at the top end of the table for perhaps only one player a season and reaching the champions league on a consistent basis.

I am very excited and feel that we are about to enter a new era as Evertonians. Success is around the corner...

Today is the day to stop making jarg 11's and start watching footie.

I'll get excited when its announced, until then these rumours can do one.

Taking this thread seriously (which I definitely shouldn't be), this is a pretty naive prediction

Did this really deserve a new thread?

We're second best so far against Watford, quality my arse.

What does 30mins into the first game of the season have to do with 12months of squad rebuilding...

Most of the replies here just highlight the negativity and short sightedness of this process...especially with what Moyes left Martinez with.
