The 70,584 crowd at Wembley tonight for the Team GB Ladies vs Brazil Ladies Olympic football match broke the all time attendance record for a ladies' football match in this country.

The previous record as stated in the BBC article was 53,000 fans at Goodison Park back on Boxing Day 1920, to watch Dick Kerr's Ladies vs St Helens Ladies.

That never looked liked 70k in the crowd to me. Great result tho, and they've scored some nice goals....

No way was there 70,000. Looked more like 30,000 to me... If that. It was a better game than anything I have seen from the men in years though. Good luck to them. Finally an England side with skill that likes to attack

They had sold 70k, which probably means they gave away 40k and hardly any of those turned up and sold 30k.

I heard on the TV this morning about that record at Goodison and they also said 15k got turned away because it was full!

The Dick, Kerr Ladies team story is a great piece of football history and some of the old b/w photo's are a fabulous reminder of what life was like a hundred years ago. After the amazing GP turnout, the FA banned womens football for fear it would take fans away from the mens game.....
