There seems to be a notion abroad that a deflection is simply good luck. As a former amateur goalkeeper, I can assure you that I never put the concession of a deflected goal down to bad luck. It's almost always the result of the attacking team causing chaos in the defense, pulling people out of position, and generally pressuring the mistake. I would go mad with defenders claiming bad luck having deflected a shot past me. It was rarely bad luck. It might have been unfortunate for the player who made the deflection, but it was always the result of somebody else in the defence not doing this job properly and exposing the final defender to his fate. Alternatively, it was simply a defender being too far off the ball and, therefore, deflecting the shot instead of blocking it.
If we are now benefiting from a few deflections, that's because we are causing havoc in the opposition's defence. Look at how well Iwobi did to help the ball on to Gordon against United. Similarly, Rondon was causing chaos before the ball broke to Richarlison last night. This is good attacking play. Lord knows I like to find fault with Everton - and there are rich pickings to critique - but Richarlison and Gordon weren't lucky. We got our reward for attacking and discommoding our opponents.
