A Consolation Prize

If it’s all about champions only then why didn’t they qualify for final? They lost against a better team in the knockout phase and that’s all that matters. As bad a track record of Liverpool has been domestically, this year they lost the league just by one point and the total points they have won is much higher than league champions in other country. Not only that, they have reached back to back finals so it’s no fluke.

Most of the world, including me and you, would still watch the match live. Arguably, Europa league final will have two bigger clubs competing but the TRP won’t be nearly close. That’s because CL is the best prize out there. SAF only regret was he didn’t win more CL titles

Ah lads, come on. I'm all for demeaning Liverpool and their scarce achievements, but the Champions League is one of the biggest in the game. I think it jostles in importance with the domestic leagues depending on where the clubs in question are at that time. For instance, I reckon Liverpool would trade the CL for the PL and City the PL for the CL this year, Madrid would probably have traded one or two of their wins the last few years for a few more La Ligas in the last decade. It really does depend, but it's certainly the most elite cup competition and an amazing achievement
Only reason I can see the red bottlers having an outside shot of the league next season - Citeh going absolutely all in for the CL. They're in a similar sort of situation as UtD were 20 years ago where they've dominated the domestic league enough that the CL starts to become this all encompassing mission. Utd never really built a big European legacy from that period of dominance - think they got to more semi-finals than anyone but only converted two (v scrappy wins) and never the consensus pick as the best team in Europe, so City have a lot of motivation to eclipse them.

Notwithstanding some claims on this thread, the Champions League is an enormously prestigious competition and Liverpool FC are to be commended for coming in second two years in a row.

i really don’t want us qualifying for he Champions League. As well as the fact we wouldn’t win it, so it’s a waste of time entering. It’s been massively devalued by the RS and Spurs reaching the final. The competition is a joke and needs to be seriously reshaped so the biggest and best Clubs win it every year. Would much rather win a domestic cup.
Is that better? I’m starting to get the hang of this ‘not having an opinion, and go with the narrative so I won’t be accused of being a RS’.

Anyone who doesnt recognise it is a prestigious trophy is a bit weird. And winning either the CL or the EL would underline you are a more than decent side.

But that said, it doesnt prove much. You aint the best team in Europe if you win it. You are the better of two sides in a one off match.

Its pretty neat having all 4 finalists being from England though, mainly cos BT are lobbing both matches on free telly.

Let's view this from English football perspective. You could speak to any Arsenal fans, and they would happily trade some of their league wins under Wenger, for a CL trophy. You could speak to any Chelsea fans, and every one of them will say their 2012 CL win was their greatest win, better than any of their league wins. You could speak to any United fans, and they will all say their 1999 and 2008 CL wins were greater than any of their numerous league wins under SAF, and most of them would trade some of their league trophies for another CL.

Maybe it's because we're already in the PL and qualify for that every season that we Blues highlight the PL as the be all and end all and limit the CL as a minor competition because we have never qualified for it.

When we get in the CL whenever that is then maybe we'll start to appreciate the true value and status of the CL as the premier club competition on the planet.
Did you conveniently forget that "we" actually DID qualify in 1985 ,and 1987 but weren't allowed to compete due to another club's fans? Revisionist history mate, your mask has well and truly slipped.

The consolation prize will be the Charity Shield as Spurs are going to rattle them in Madrid. Look forward to them lauding a pre season win over City as a triumph over the evil nature of modern football.

It's been what, 80 years between them since they last actually won a league title? That sort of fact makes the whole thing feel redundant.

It's the biggest trophy in club football but it's not the one they set their heart on, that's a fact but they'll never admit. It will still be a fantastic achievement if they win it but won't be a patch or any of the other 5 they already have and they know that, this one just feels a bit like a League Cup final with it's lacklustre build up or something.

They do that every season, roydo.

UEFA made them do it due to the poor viewing figures the first year BT had exclusive rights the European competions.

Biggest KO cup competition.

Nowhere near as important as the title.

Spurs are a very good cup team. I think they edge this knock out competition's final, tbh.
