I think we should line up like this next game....start putting the fear of God in to the opposition.....

I went for 4-1-3-2, I think it is the most adaptable formation. Unfortunately it would spell the end for Barry. The 1 position requires someone who can read the game but also get himself into the positions to stop opposition players getting a run at our centre backs. Han a perhaps. Our full backs could raid forward with the wide men in the 3 covering back when needed. Barkley, if he gets himself up to his potential would sit behind the front two. We need a new player with pace to play off Lukaku, or his replacement if he can't get to grips with hold up play.

...I'm not so sure top teams strictly adhere to such systems, it's more about what you do when you have the ball and what do you do when you don't.

Play with the out and out CF but players need to join in and go beyond him when you get the ball. No isolation. Fluidity. It means really hard work but provides goal threat from various areas.

When the opposition has the ball, it's about getting a defensive shape quickly and not leaving your back line exposed. Not rocket science but not confining to rigid systems.
Spot on, Mr Eggs.
For an example of how this works, just watch the Everton v Bayern Munich game from 1985. Don't think Kendall used phrases like "pressing game" or defend as a unit" in his team talks.
