A Case for Baines over Cole - Interesting stuff from Opta stats

As Blues fans we already knew it but Bainsey's defensive stats (interceptions, headers, etc). stack up, not only against Cole, but also other media highly regarded full backs such as Evra, Sagna etc. His attacking stats are unlikely to be matched by anyone. So for me he just has to be the No 1 now. Cole is now merely steady, reliable and experienced - a Phil Neville if you like although not quite as old. Bainsey offers so much more if England are to really take Teams on.

ive said it many times watching baines play for england, he isnt utilised anywhere near as much as he could be. invairably he's been playing behind a winger who seems to cut in and shoot like young rather than someone who will give the ball back to him as hes making a run. hopefully tonight will be the start for baines in an england shirt, he deserves it now. he just needs the other players in the england team to trust him like the everton players do and give the ball to him going forwards.

I'd like to see him take a free kick rather than let someone who's clearly not as good shout louder than him.

That game where Baines & Gerrard played wide left was bloody embarassing.

Baines couldn't go anywhere over the halfway line 'cause Stevie Me had made an unecessary run to the mens' bogs to chase down one of his hollywood specials.

Stick him with a left sided player who can actually play and we'll see the best of him...or just pretend Pienaar's british ffs.

I hope he does well, but I've never seen Baines look very assured in an England jersey. It would be no surprise if he made a little mistake and the National Press decide to jump on him as a consequence.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Baines was sold within the next 12 months. Oviedo has been signed with a view to becoming a first team player IMO. Yes, he is being signed as cover for the moment, but I can't see that being a long term arrangement.

Every time I've seen Baines play for England they put a mug in front of him who can't defend and doesn't use him. Not sure who'll be up top but if it's a decent header of the ball then Baines should be seeing a lot of the ball.

It's crap, isn't it. Then you get dickheads saying he's crap when the opposing team double up on him because he's been left to it by his "winger".

for everton he is given a license to run forward as much as he wants and its up to other players to cover for him, with england its not like that you have to defend first and then attack making intelligent runs.

He needs to hold his own and show he can put in a good offensive and defensive shift, ans showe that he has the ability to change his style of play.

anyone who thinks baines can play like he does for us and then play the same way for england doesent understand football.

Did you bite because they were having a go at Stevie G mate?

Really, if England wanted to live up to their ambitions they should be phasing out players like Cole and Gerrard and replacing them with players like Baines who are just as good, if not better, but have many more years in them at the top rather than maybe 1 or 2. It's a shame the England administration seem obsessed with short-termism when teams like Germany have shown going with the youth can make you much more competitive than if you stuck with the old farts.

nothing wrong with cole he has been one of the most consistent preformers for england and still is one of the best LBs in the world. Cole will retire after the next world cup by which time he will be 33.
Baines is hardly a youngster himself he is 27. at the world cup he will be 29.
