I remember it like it was yesterday. I know this thread has been properly derailed, but thought I'd chime it (busy day today).
At the time, I was a Store Manager for Foot Locker working in Seattle. It was actually my day off, but as with most jobs...especially in retail...sometimes your day off has to be partially sacrificed...in this case it was to help set up a sale. My plan was to go in at 8AM and leave by about 10AM to enjoy the rest of my day off. My normal routine was to stumble out of bed at around 6AM and turn on the TV whilst waking up. Ease into my morning with The Weather Channel or CNN. That morning was a CNN morning.
The first plane had hit ~15 minutes prior to me turning on the TV. I was thinking...hmm fire in one of the Twin Towers. Meh. At that point they didn't really know what had happened...there were reports of possible terrorist activity, but they really didn't know. Then BOOM...within a minute or two the second plane hit the other tower. Needless to say, adrenaline had kicked in and I was wide awake. Then the Pentagon about a half hour later! This shizz is out of control! I think it really became real when the first tower collapsed...like heart breaking/scary/OH NO!/Etc. Within minutes of the first tower going down, word of ANOTHER plane going down in PA. FFS! It's happening everywhere. Then the second tower came down. Good Morning to me...all of it happened (and yes I had to look up the timeline to remember) between 5:46 AM my time when the first plane hit and 7:18 AM when the second tower came down.
I didn't go to work. Didn't matter, the country had come to a stand still. My day off was spent talking to family and friends and watching LOADS of CNN. My store didn't reopen for two days, so literally, I was glued to my TV for 3 straight days just watching over and over and over and over the images of that day.
I reopened my store on the 14th. I'll never forget how busy we were that day.
