10kms deep which is nothing. At that size I would think there would be serious Tsunami issues

6ft waves hit the coast of chile apparently.

Upgraded to 8.2. Thst part of the world is renowned for big quakes.

Hope the damage and loss of life in Chile wasn't too severe.

Was in an 8.1 while stationed on Guam. Fortunately our barracks were hardened and minimal damage. The island suffered some damage, but is made of coral and it had been raining all day, making it react more like a 209sqmi sponge.

Offshore mate....

No reports of any one hurt, so should be good.

I just read a bit that mentioned adobe buildings had collapsed and 90% of homes where without power at the time of posting. Another AP bit stated two people were confirmed dead. We'll find out more when the smoke clears, as it were.

Sad news.

Quite shocked at the little waves...an yes, this area is notorious for big quakes and tsunami's.

The 9.5 quake in 1960 was coupled with a tsunami with waves up to 25 metres (82 ft) (I simply can't imagine) in Chile and devastated Hilo, HI...something like 40 foot waves there.

The 8.8 quake in Concepcion moved the entire city 10 feet to the west...crazy

After the boxing day tsunami, there was a pretty serious quake tsunami warning people went down to Auckland beaches to see

Kiwi's eh

I went surfing on that day, got some very nice waves, NEA. Sad day for those who lost loved ones though. Likewise today, hopefully the death toll and impact isnt huge.

Yeah

All depends what depth its it and if the quake ruptured up and down ( like japan) or left and right.

Sad news still

Quite a few earthquakes in this region since this thread was made. Huge 7.8 has hit land in the last hour.

Sad news. No reports of casualties so far
