7th place trophy

Only thing we can say is it would be an improvement League wise anyway on last season, however with the early cup exits this season has been turgid at best,at least we ran almost all the way last season in both cups which at least maintained interest.
Thats the one thing a cup run does do (maintain an interest - and a possible trip to Wembley). If we finish 7th to 10th its an improvement on last year (position wise). But what is clear is that there's bigger gap between top 6 and the group behind. Its going to take a big re-build to bridge that gap in my view.

get in the new players and start putting players in we intend to be playing next season. relegation I wouldn't have thought is an issue, so play these young lads now get them ready for next season, nothing to lose by not doing it. would keep interest in seeing our new side develop I think.
Calvin Lewis, Davis, Holgate, lookman

I take your point up to a point Bilko but it is not true to say that we have "nothing to lose".

Where we sit in the table right now will in all probability ensure a spot in Europe next season.

I for one would love to see us back in the EL next season.

We are all in the dumps after yesterday, or we should be, but as a club we need to focus on winning as many league games as possible between now and May.

What is really sticking in my craw is seeing all those "mini league" tables in the papers at the moment featuring the top 6 .. and the name of Everton is distinctly absent.

Indeed.

"Best Of The Rest" used to mean winning the 5th Place Trophy.

But now it means winning the 7th Place one :(

It seems that once more elite football in England has moved up a gear and once more EFC are left playing catch up

If this is what Everton should expect or a for nowadays, then the game is well and truly up and I have no interest in it.

We're Everton, FFS. And an Everton apparently with money behind us for once. I'll NEVER accept or 'aim' for 7th, and certainly not by playing the kind of football being served up.

I agree with your points that i've deleted but wanted to question these bits.

I completely appreciate our fans frustrations and that 7th place is not "success" for this club. However, what did you realistically expect from this season once the transfer window closed in late August?

We all want success back at Everton but we have to view our ambitions for this season with a sense of realism. The top 6 clubs all have far bigger resources than we do. At this moment in time, we simply cannot compete with them, on or off the pitch. Their playing squads have far more quality and far more depth than ours.

Martinez set us back and had us 11th in the past 2 seasons, so do you not think that a 7th placed finish at best is both realistic and a sign of progress in relation to the previous 2?

If our ambitions in 3 years time is to finish 7th, then everything you have said will be spot on. But a bit of patience is needed in my opinion, even though it's hard to do.

7th with a decent run of form at some point between now and the end of the season where we see Koeman bring in some first XI players this month and get a system working, putting some distance between ourselves and 8th place, would be a good season in the league. We just finished 11th in consecutive seasons so 7th is without doubt a good start.

They say the table doesn't lie. Finishing 7th will not only mean we are the 7th best team in the country, but that we are also better than we were the year before, so making progress. It doesn't matter if we finished 4th, 5th 6th or whatever some years ago, it is only now that matters.
We need to be able to sell the "project" next summer by showing we have turned things around on the pitch.

Plus there's no shame finishing behind Chelsea, Spurs, Man City, Man United, Liverpool & Arsenal with the squad we have at the minute. All on paper and in real life better than us currently.
