Think it was the Sheff U game were we totally blew it mate, strange season that was for me as a kid,I recall an Easter game v Coventry I think,Dobbo hit a screamer near the end to win it and I in my nine year old head thought it was ours at that point!!,I remember the Burnley game as well, very disappointing as Walter may have said!! and also recall another home draw towards the end of the season v a good Ipswich side, brings back the memories this thread,oh aye!!
Just had to check the record. You are right, Coventry was the Monday after the Carlisle away disaster. 0-3 was truly gutted on that journey home. Forgot we got beat in cup at home to Fulham that year too, they were second div and made the final !!!!!! Trip to Chelsea was my first London away on my own so it was slightly memorable.

we looked to be in with a chance of winning it that year, that game at Chelsea was a good one to be at , we had lost it by then but they needed to win to stay up on the day of the game it looked like they would be ok but for a load of results going agaist them, which they did, spurs staying up which pleased the locals no end for the trip back to Euston.
I met the team on the train home, all were fine with the exception of Dia Davies the horrible [Poor language removed], Pearson and Jones were getting my program signed with me tagging along they gave it to Davies, who said what do you say, if you want me to do it, and glared at me, i said, i didnt ask you for anything and dont want your name on it anyway so dont bother, Kenyon told him to do it,but i just asked for it back and walked away, one of the directors think it was ,Waterhouse flipped on him, not a way to act with a young fan , hated him for being crap , and he really was a [Poor language removed] keeper cost us the title was a arrogant gobshite of a man.
Fulham had bobby moore and alen mullery to former england captains in there side, and lost to West Ham in the final the last all english team to win the fa cup

Blimey shows how selective a memory can be!! I had no recollection at all that Chelsea were relegated that day. No wonder they wanted us down in 1998 when we edged Bolton down. For me I was just so gutted we had blown it but on the day itself was happy to get in and out alive as young lads. In theory I had a ticket waiting for me courtesy of kenny swain whose dad worked with my uncle. But had met up with a couple of lads who kept an eye on me and stayed with them. We got off tube at earls court and jumped taxi last part of journey because tube crew looked so dodgy and we clearly stuck out like a sore thumb. Didn't fancy having to claim the freebie!! Happy days... Sort of!

Got kicked out of the Chelsea game by a copper for calling the ref a blind C word, after only seven minutes. Crapped myself outside for rest of the game stood alone,(scarf hidden in pocket)

I remember going to see us play Leeds away with about 8 games to go - we drew 0-0 and the concensus view was that our hardest game in the run in was out of the way. It was an awful game as I recall and Leeds was a terrible place to go to then as an away fan. I know its no picnic now, but back then Leeds fans were renowned as being as vicious and nasty as their team. It was our results against the bottom 3 that did for us - Won 1, Drew 2 and Lost 3 against Luton, Chelsea and Carlisle. The Sheffield United game was disappointing, but they had a decent team back then and finished sixth. As others have said, our football was not pretty to watch and we were seen as almost anti-football by some pundits.

Don't agree with all these 'our football wasn't pretty to watch' views - I went to the Arsenal game in March when Everton won 2-0 and even the notoriously biased London press acknowledged how good Everton were that day.

I also went to the Luton and Chelsea games (I was at school in London at the time). Kenyon put Everton ahead early on at Luton and it seemed like a stroll to an easy victory, until some old fella called John Aston (I think he'd played in Man Utd's 1968 European cup winning team, but was well past his sell by date) scored 2 goals in a minute just before half time and Everton just never got back into it.

The Chelsea game was a non-event, other than Everton wearing one of the worst kits ever - yellow shirts and white shorts. I think Chelsea were already relegated and Everton couldn't win the league by the time the game was played. So neither team was that bothered - as far as I can remember.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I don't remember Everton ever been favourites to win the league that season - the was the odd moment, but there were always 3 other teams involved.

Didn't we lose 3-2 to Sheffield United at Goodison after being 2-0 up at half time ? I remember sitting in the front row of the Upper Park End, first time I was allowed to go to a match without an adult.....

Chelsea and Luton and spurs were on equal points that day. Carlisle were already down, they were top of the league part of the season, Chelsea had the worst goal difference meaning they had to better the other two on the day. the result, Luton got a draw so finished above them, leaving spurs only needing to get a draw in the game in hand against Leeds(sure Leeds were in a euro final and said they were going to play a weak team against spurs, might be wrong it so long ago, but sure there was murder in the press in the run up to the game) on the Monday to stay up, spurs won 4-2 as it stood at the end of are game Carlisle Chelsea and spurs( who had got beat by arsenal that day) were the bottom three nice day to be a Everton fan in London.
It was a rubbish game as you say.

I'll bow to your superior memory mate - I remember Carlisle being particulary [Poor language removed] (except in games against Everton obviously !) They were top after three games, but hit the bottom quite quickly and stayed there. Leeds played (and lost to) Bayern Munich in the European cup final in Paris, the Leeds supporters rioted at the game and I think they got banned from Europe for a while.

Poor language removed ???? I like it ;-)
