Definitely illegal.

Oh and you can't use demonoid unless you're a member, and you need to be referred I think, to sign up.

Did you know that jailbreaking is legal?

Jailbreaking is legal, yes. My iPod is jailbroken. But downloading 600 books without paying is illegal.

Mine isn't even jailbroken mate, don't need to be for the books, they're all epub files, which is the format apple use anyway.

It's the content that's illegal mate. You're not paying for it, quite simple. It's in the same format, because it will be ripped straight from the genuine copies I'd imagine, and of course so it will work on any iPods/iPads.

Technically jailbreaking an Apple product is a violation of the Terms of Service (TOS) which means Apple can sue you.

And getting stuff from Demonoid is WAAAAAAAAY illegal.

No they can't sue you. They just have no obligations to you anymore; ie the warranty is voided.

But if you restore your iPod, all traces of a jailbreak are erased anyway.

EDIT: In the past, they might have been able to (although they never would), but a few months ago the newest updates to the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) made it legal to jailbreak.

Haha, I was just flicking through my tech magazine and saw the latest updates to the DCMA, so I thought I would ccome on here and correct myself, but you have done it already!

Although the jailbreaking is specifically aimed at being able to add any legally aquired third party software.

Other additions to the latest round of DMCA exceptions.....you can bypass the CSS encryption on DVD's when using short portions of the motion picture for documentary, educational or non-commercial videos. Also you can crack ebook DRM for conversion to audio book, so long as a commercially available alternative doesnt exist.

Some people jailbreak to purely to make the experience easier, with legal tools like sbsettings, which allows you to change the brightness, turn on/off wifi, clear the RAM etc, no matter what you're doing without having to exit apps. And of course there's backgrounder -- an app so you can multitask.

But yes, it's a bit like downloading utorrent or something, as it facilitates piracy, and although not illegal in itself, people will do illegal things with it.
