what is Bidmas? In the US we use PEMDAS

Parenthases
Exponents
Multiplication/Division
Addition/Subtraction

Never understood why Americans use the word "parantheses" rather than "brackets". I can only assume 'parentheses' is the proper technical term? In that case then your word is better. I can only think of one other I prefer: crossing guard sounds a million times better than 'lollypop man'.

BIDMAS - even though logically the answer is 1

I used to hate 'acronymised' learning. Felt like a stupid memory test, like nnemonics, not really learning. I was thinking the other day, it's exactly how my mind works when I do normal multiplication; I was trying to do 16x16 in my head and I did 10x10, 6x6 and then two lots of 10x6 (because it occurs 'twice' if you see what I mean) to get 100 + 36 + 120 = 256. It's weird, something I'd done naturally for years and I'd never made the connection because I was too busy arsing round with BIDMAS and all that crap. I can only really understand something when I break it into its constituent pieces and understand them all from first principles... I really don't think knowing a formula is helpful

IDK if it's consistent, but we call these brackets --> [] and these parenthesis --> ()

4 days this thread has been running.

I used to be able to answer a question like that in under 4 minutes.

The worlds gone mad.
