5th greatest club side in England?

Leagues aren't the be all and end all but Collymore has engineered this so a EC win is 10% more valuable than a league win, which is just not the case at all. Inclined to agree with davek. 38 (plus) game seasons are the ultimate measure of superiority in a given season.

Much of a muchness really. We'd argue leagues are more important, they'd argue the European Cup is weighted more, Spurs would say that FA Cups are dead important.

Who cares, were ace and they're bad bells.

Had this same debate on NSNO some time ago. I'd reluctantly put Villa above us in the trophies unelss you take into account the Charity Shield, which we have won more than them. It probably clutching at straws, but you don't have a chance to win it unless you've won the league or FA cup. But in relation to the other cups, its a micky mouse cup.

THING IS THAT THE ARL DIVISION ONE WAS WELL HARDER TO WIN IN THE 70S AND 80S AND EVERY1 KNOWS THAT AS PHIL THOMMO SAID IT HIMSELF ON SOCCER SATURDAY. WE WON MOST OF THEM ALL WITH ONLY TWO SUBS AND BEFORE THESE NEW ADIDAS PREDADTOR BOOTS WHICH ARE LIKE CHEATING. UNITED SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST SEVEN TITLES DEDUCTED FOR THAT WHICH LEAVES US ON EIGHTEEN AND DEM ON TWELVE. AND FIVE TIMES. NYWA.

I could imagine that big nosed cnut saying that too.

He can debate all he wants, we're 4th. It'll always come back to success on the pitch and League Championships are the yardstick.

United
Liverpool
Arsenal
Everton

This is the only yardstick, League titles and we are now just 4th, but still above Villa and the rest.

Money aside, I'd rather win the League than the CL, or any other knockout tournament.

It’s hard to dispute the result of a league format. Knockout tournaments can be about who you avoid, bit of luck here and there, pacts with the devil n' so forth.

I mean, qualifying through 4th in the PL, sneak out of your group, avoid the big guns, a few suspect decisions and a 'hare vs. tortoise' final, it could never happen, could it? (shudders)

You can prove anything with statistics:

If you want to use league accomplishments as a barometer of a club's standing in the game, then why not take an average position, based on all top flight finishing positions. If you add up all Everton's top flight finishes and divide that by the number of seasons spent in the top flight, our average position is 9th (9.12963 exactly).

By comparison, add up the sh!te's, their average position is 7th (6.572917). Utd's is the same, 7th (6.873563). Of course there's going to be people saying what about XYZ... e.g. new teams to the top flight who've only done 2 seasons and finished 3rd both times... etc... (in that example you'd set the bar at something like minimum 30 top flight seasons or something).

I'm not suggesting this is a way in which we should try and rank football clubs over the long term - actually it's exactly the reason why noone should bother.

What you must also remember is that 88.2% of statistics are made up on the spot. (These weren't, ironically).

For me, Everton will always be number 1 - we're just a generous sort of people, we've let lesser sorts borrow our cups and titles over the years - helping to bring joy to the misguided masses - making personal sacrifices for the good of the nation in a Jesus-like manner.
