Dont know if anyone heard the debate last night - (TBH collymore and the other fella just shouted over each other for most of it), but the ex RS wife-beater has put EFC at 5th in the greatest ever english club sides.
Is this about right or does anyone else believe - as I do that EFC should be 1st?

its probably about right to be fair!(tho it pains me to say it..)

I thought we should have been above Villa but I just checked their honours list and I've got to agree.

We've won the league 2 more times than them, but they've won 2 more FA cups, the league cup 5 times (we've never won it) and they've won the main European cup, which is obviously a bigger accomplishment than our cup winner's cup.

On the other hand, I try not to pay attention to European trophies too much with us because we never got the chance to compete during our prime. And domestically, although Villa have more honours, we've won the league more which is the biggest honour and I think we've spent more time in the top flight. We've also never dropped below the second tier (and only for a total of 3 or 4 seasons) whereas they've won the third division title so they've obviously dropped lower.

All in all though, I'd say yeah, Villa are probably above us to be honest. They are the main club in England's second city, though, so there's no shame in that. The points system they've used is highly debatable mind... I mean, more points for the UEFA cup than the cup winner's cup? The latter was considered to be less than the CL/European cup but more than the UEFA cup in terms of prestige.

He can debate all he wants, we're 4th. It'll always come back to success on the pitch and League Championships are the yardstick.

United
Liverpool
Arsenal
Everton

Villa are a fine club, but they're not Everton's equal never mind our superiors.

We've won so much more than Villa since the early 20th Century, going back to pre-war football really distorts it.

Also omitting the Charity Shield was unusual, it was well regarded until recent times.

Oh and CL = European Cup > Title win? Spoken like a true former RS.

How do you figure mate? Care to back that up with something a bit more substantial?

The honours list says they're our superiors.

Cups are all well and good, but they're a lottery, and no indication as to the level a team has attained. Only the Leauge does that.

There's been some massive English clubs in the history of the game who have been there or thereabouts in top flight football since they were formed. Not many of them win league titles, though. Newcastle and Man City have been, and still are, major clubs - between them they've won 6 league titles. We've racked up 9 to Villa's 7. Ergo we are more successful.

Big club, Villa. They're not as successful as us though.

Definitely agree with this. League championships should be considered the pinnacle. Liverpool won the CL and got 58 points in the league and were appallingly lucky to win the CL. Luck balances itself out over a league season so it's a bigger achievement IMO

It's the only way to measure success, mate. There is no other way.
