Adoo Matt. Invasion? There's not enough Saddlers fans to cause an argument let alone a fight!!

Yeah we come in total peace my friend. Just nice to share this 40 years anniversary with you.

Cheers The Blue Fox. Thought I'd sign up to this fine forum and see if any Everton fans from yesteryear were present that day! Not sure how many travelled up from Walsall that day but there were thousands! Some one pointed out that there were more present at Goodison that day than your next home game with Leeds in Div 1. !! Bernie Wright returned to Fellows Park and in 74-5 was one of the heroes in a great FA Cup run in which we defeated Man Utd and Newcastle. Bernie scored in the 3-2 win over United. There was no finess to his game, he just powered his way threw defences and let's just say he could look after himself.
i was working in wolverhampton in 87 with a lad who new bernie well .worked with him all over the midlands labouring with bernie he told me,ps i would of thought there was over 40,000 the day walsall come to goody park ,wasnt that the year of the power cuts

Yes mate 45,462 at Goodison for the Walsall visit. Think power cuts came later that year? Defo in 73. Nice recollection of Bernie from your spell working in Wolvo in 87. Bernie actually became a local referee (hard to believe) and a teacher! (even harder to believe) Not sure where he is based now. Was Trowbridge for a while.

could of swore tottenham knocked us out that year ,and we played them 3 0r 4 days later in the leauge game .in the afternoon sagged school to get to goody park that day sure it was that year could be wrong ,reckon bernie either scored v man city or sheff utd in his home debut think he only scored the once .

Just checked on the net and your next games were all Saturdays. Leeds H 0-0 on 12th Newcastle A 0-0 on 19th then Spurs H 0-2 in the FA Cup on 26th. The following Wednesday, March 1st, you played Spurs at H again, in the League 1-1. Maybe that was what you were thinking of? I won't remind you of the score from the NEXT game in that sequence!

Oh right. I wasn't too sure when those confided power cuts came in to being. Don't think we played any games in midweek afternoons. Yes that other game was against t'oher lot from Merseyside. Henry Newton was signed for Walsall by Dave Mackay in 1977. Only played about 10 games for us but had to retire with a arthritic hip. Only about 32. Pity cos he was good back in the day. Another player we signed was Stuart Rimmer whom I seem to remember did play a couple of first team games for Everton as a kid.

scored a hell of a lot of goals for chester did rimmer ,very light weight. played a few games for r 1st team

i was at that game, only a kid like, sure the goalie had a good game as i recall keeping an eye on him for a few weeks thinking he would be worth picking up.Bernie wright recall him coming on in a night game think it was norwich, he had injured two of there players before touching the ball, chess champ i beleive as well

I was there - but I can't remember much apart from scrambling a 2-1 win. Mark Wallington (ex Leicester) in goal for Walsall. West, Kendall, Whittle, Royle - oh & Bernie - come to Goodison today you can see Dennis!

Cheers, Edge. You're correct mate- Bernie was indeed a very good chees player.
